Question: Two days ago I had sex with my boyfriend and he got rather rough and my clitoris was scratched during the process. At first I didn't feel any pain, and then the next day I was slightly uncomfortable especially when I walked. Now the pain is unbearable and it kills me to walk even a short distance. My clit is red, and it looks raw. I'm not sure what to do, but I want the pain to stop. I'm afraid to go to the doctor because I'm only 17 and I don't want my parents to know that I'm sexually active. What should I do?

Answer: I am not a doctor so I cannot provide medical advice, only general information.

If an infection has developed, indicated by redness, swelling, pain, and a discharge please consult a doctor immediately.

The vulva is highly vascular, has a rich blood supply, so it usually heals very quickly.

Try treating the injury as you would any other wound. Rinse your vulva and clitoris with clean water and apply an antibiotic ointment to your clitoris. Wear loose fitting cloths and cotton underwear. Sleep nude or at least bare bottomed.

In the future, make sure you boyfriend washes his hands, trims his fingernails, and ensures there are no rough edges on his fingernails. He also needs to learn to be gentle, as more is not always better. In general, additional lubrication is required during stimulation of the vulva. Men tend too use too much pressure when stimulating the vulva and they frequently need to be taught otherwise by their partner.
