Question: About 8 months ago I found a hard lump on my lower labia, which swelled up causing large amounts of pain. It cleared after using warm water, as the fluid came out. However, it seems to have returned again. I know how to get rid of it but should I be concerned about any serious infection or seek a doctor's advice, or will it get better without me having to worry? Is there anything I should be doing to stop it from happening again?

Answer: I am not sure if you are referring to your inner or outer labia. A Bartholin's gland, also known as a "greater vestibular gland" and "vulvovaginal gland", is located on both sides of the vaginal opening. They produce mucous that may lubricate the vulva, but their exact function is unknown. They may become plugged resulting in inflammation and pain, bartholinitis. In chronic bartholinitis, cysts may form. When inflamed, these glands can make intercourse painful or impossible. I recommend seeing a doctor to find the cause and possible prevention. Make sure you are not wearing tight clothing that irritates your vulva. Please see the page about Hygiene to learn about proper care of your vulva.
